The final tablet we got our hands on during ASUS’s CES showing was the MeMO 171. We’ve seen this little guy before as the Eee Pad MeMO 3D — but this time they’ve dropped the 3D and hope to upgrade Honeycomb to Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future. The included capacitive stylus and MeMIC Bluetooth companion phone/media play is all here. As for the rest of the specs, they are as follows:
7" WXGA (1280 x 800) IPS panel with capacitive touch
1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8260 processor
1GB RAM
16GB/32GB eMMC internal storage and "ASUS Webstorage" options
WLAN 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, and Qualcomm GPS One
5MP rear camera with autofocus and 1080P recording and 1.2MP front camera
G-sensor, e-compass, light sensor, gyroscope, and proximity sensor
Micro-USB port, micro-HDMI (1.3a), and MicroSD card reader
4400mAh lithium-polymer battery with 8.5hrs video playback
7.8 x 4.6 x 0.50" and 14.2oz
You could pretty much file the MeMO 171 under one more ASUS device we’ll likely never see hit stateside. I can’t imagine something like this would do very well in the US and ASUS specifically mentioned they currently have no plans to bring the MeMO 171 anywhere outside of it’s homeland. What do you guys think? Heartbroken? Or is the MeMO 171 too gimmicky?
A while back we learned LG planned to up its 3D ante by providing a software update to their Optimus 3D that would provide tools to bring standard 2D games into the third dimension. That update, build number V10K, is rolling out now to some European Optimus 3D handsets. LG has compiled a list of compatible titles, but most games should be eligible for a run at 3D provided they are built on OpenGL (though a drop in performance may be noticed).
The update is currently only available using LG’s PC update utility, though it should eventually begin moving out over the air. For everyone else there is the XDA link below.
If you haven’t heard, there’s this little convention going on in Los Angeles, California called Call of Duty XP 2011. As the name suggests, this convention is all about Call of Duty and its legion of fans who gather to watch previews, act out levels from the game and generally just have a good ‘ol time. Surprisingly, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 team actually made an announcement today to their players letting them know of an app in the works for Android and iOS. Before you freak out — no this isn’t a game app. Instead this app will allow COD players to modify their weapons and gear while away from the game and attempting to function normally in society.
The app will be free to download, only requiring your log-in info to access your gear. No release date has been given but it’s definitely something to look out for. Great — as if my friend Mike needed another way to fuel his addiction.
After launching video calling for a mere four devices and leaving everyone wondering when a majority of the Android-toting masses would get the functionality, Skype has finally updated their application to add new devices. It’s a significant list, too, with devices such as the Galaxy S and SII. both the EVO 4G and EVO 3D, the DROID Charge, the Thunderbolt and more making appearances in this update. This brings the total to 21 devices. You’ll need to be on Gingerbread, but all of these devices have either been updated to Gingerbread or were launched with it. Apparently, Skype can only access the back camera on 2.2 and 2.1, something many other applications don’t seem to have a problem with. Whatevs, download’s in the Android market and the full list is below. [Market]

What took the original Samsung Galaxy S 85 days to achieve has taken the Galaxy S II a mere 55: Samsung has sold 3 million of their new dual-core flagship. While big sales in the manufacturer’s native Korea play a large part in the figure, Sammy also pointed to increased sales across Europe as key in helping to achieve the milestone. Samsung has been the best-selling mobile brand in the UK for the past 17 weeks and has made up for a third of smartphone sales in Austria and Switzerland. But the Galaxy S II’s rollout hasn’t ceased yet. The phone was just launched in Mexico and Brazil, and will soon make its way to North America via several Canadian carriers. Now if we could only get a release date for the US version.
